Living in Roma
Roma is one of Mexico City's most walkable neighborhoods, built around porfirian mansions, art nouveau facades and tree-lined streets like Álvaro Obregón. Most of what comes up for rent here is apartments, from restored early-century buildings to newer mid-rise construction inserted after 1985 and 2017. Houses exist but are genuinely scarce, and when they appear they tend to be architecturally distinctive rather than generic. Roma Norte leans creative and international, with galleries, Mercado de Medellín and a strong dining and nightlife scene; Roma Sur is quieter and more residential. Just west, Condesa offers a greener, park-centered alternative.
What to consider before renting
Much of Roma Norte sits within a protected heritage zone, so restored buildings often keep original details but limit structural changes. Parking is tight and metered (parquímetro) across most of the colonia, so confirm whether a listing includes a spot. The area sits on soft lacustrine soil and was affected by the 2017 earthquake; many buildings have since been reviewed or reinforced, and it's reasonable to ask about a building's status. Furnished apartments are common here, especially in Roma Norte, which suits shorter stays or arrivals from abroad. Streets along the bar corridors can be noisy at night, while Doctores to the east runs more affordable.
