Buying an apartment here means buying into a small building rather than a tower: three or four floors, a pool almost every time, and a roof terrace shared between a handful of owners. Most of the recent building is at the southeast end, in apartments for sale in Brisas de Zicatela and along the streets of Los Tamarindos behind the beach. The older side of town, around Puerto Escondido Centro and the clifftop streets of Bacocho, is where the walled plots and low houses are.

What to consider before buying

A building with a pool and a handful of owners has an arrangement behind it that you take on, so ask who runs it and what keeping it costs. Many of these buildings hold their own water in a cistern, worth confirming before the dry months. Sea views are common, but on a three-storey building the difference between the ground floor and the top one is large, so walk up before deciding.
