Living in Merida

One avenue sets the pace for apartment living in Merida. Prolongación Paseo de Montejo starts at the roundabout of the Monumento a la Patria, the neo-Maya piece Rómulo Rozo finished in 1956, and runs north for kilometers. Benito Juárez Norte covers the stretch around the Península Montejo shopping center; Sodzil Norte takes over where the avenue meets the Anillo Periférico; and at that crossing Vía Montejo is a mixed-use complex of residential towers, offices and The Harbor mall, right where the road becomes the highway to the port. Line 1 of the Ie-Tram, the electric bus, serves this axis, with a dedicated lane along the old rail alignment.

What to consider before renting

Not everything vertical is on Montejo. Altabrisa, on Calle 24 well east of the avenue, built its own center of gravity: Plaza Altabrisa and the Star Médica hospital stand inside its own blocks, so errands and appointments never require the corridor. Next door, Colonia Maya sits inside the ring road on Calle 34, close enough to lean on the same Altabrisa errands without living on its avenue. And the coast is no cheap escape: renting an apartment in Progreso, the port about thirty-five kilometers north on federal highway 261, costs more than in Merida.
