It took three decades to fully construct this fabulous handmade house by Parra, built in several stages. Parra was a pioneer in reusing materials with history; this is how doors, windows, partitions, balustrades {all found objects from demolitions around Mexico} became part of his houses. He gave these materials a new life. His facades were a harmonious trencadis of stone, demolition bricks, and always ancient wooden doorways.

This house contains the characteristic elements of Parra such as arches, wooden beams, his typical latticework, vaults, balustrades, etc. One of the floors belonged to the old railway station and something unique; one day in the mid-eighties, Jose and Clarissa found a wooden granary from the 18th century in perfect condition in the Sierra of Puebla. With that wood, Parra built "La troje," to which Art Nouveau doors and windows were also added along with antique bathroom furniture. He was a true precursor of recycling.

"It’s a journey" "it’s like entering another world" are frequent comments among visitors to this fantastic house of the also called "The other Architect of the 20th century." The house in Cantera was always one of his favorite properties to show when he had visitors from abroad.

In the seventies, they decided to expand the main bathroom; they say they brought a mariachi into the bathroom for the inauguration and celebration of the beauty that Manuel Parra left behind.

Jose and Clarissa forged a great friendship with the Parras. They frequently visited for breakfast or lunch, and they prepared Sonoran dishes, which were their favorites. Since childhood, we were fascinated by the character as he had a very sharp sense of humor, he was a joker, and listening to his travel stories or his viewpoints was always a delight.

It was during one of those breakfasts that we saw him sketch a plan on a napkin and outline with bricks on the floor indicating where the first walls of a new bedroom should be raised; he meticulously inspected the land to define the orientation and light entries. There is not a single square or rectangular room in this house. Parra was a magician at capturing light and creating different atmospheres, a true genius.
Niches, recesses, bull's-eye windows, benches, fountains, movement, and unexpected details are part of this unique and extraordinary house.
More than a house, Cantera is like a great sculpture. An object of art that can be inhabited and lived to the fullest.
