Living in Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is built on avenues that run parallel to the coast, crossed by numbered streets, with Fifth Avenue (Quinta Avenida) as the pedestrian spine that gathers shops, restaurants, and nightlife. Living close to that spine means having the beach and services right outside your door; a few blocks in, the same sea and shops stay within walking distance, but the streets feel different, with less foot traffic and less noise at night. Further south, the city runs into the ferry pier that connects to Cozumel and the gated communities of Playacar. Furnished rentals are common across the city.
What to consider before renting
Walking distance to Fifth Avenue changes daily life: farther out, a trip depends more on a colectivo, an urban bus, or a car, since public transit connects downtown with other parts of the city without covering it all on foot. The sea is close to a large part of the city, but real proximity to the coast varies from one street to the next, even within the same stretch of the city.
