Living in Cancún

Cancún was founded in 1970 as a city planned by the federal government, split from the start into two parts: the Hotel Zone, a 22-kilometer strip between the Caribbean Sea and Nichupté Lagoon, and the mainland area, laid out in superblocks around Avenida Tulum. For renters, daily life looks different depending on whether you're near that avenue and downtown, where most everyday services are concentrated, or in newer areas to the west, along corridors like Bonampak and López Portillo. City buses connect the mainland with the Hotel Zone along Boulevard Kukulcán.

What to consider before renting

Street structure differs between downtown and the areas that grew to the west. In the superblocks, interior streets connect to avenues like Tulum, Kabah, and Yaxchilán, while to the west, much of the movement runs along routes like Bonampak and López Portillo. That difference changes how you reach services and other parts of the city. On top of that, the rainy and hurricane season between June and November is a regular part of getting around Cancún.
