Living in Monterrey

Monterrey is easier to read as a handful of rumbos, the local word for the city's compass-quarters, than as one single city. The primer cuadro (the original downtown grid), with the Macroplaza, the Faro del Comercio and the cobbled blocks of Barrio Antiguo, is the part built for walking, and Centro keeps the Línea 2 stations of that grid within a few blocks. Just west of it, Obispado sits under the hill topped by the Palacio del Obispado, today the Museo Regional de Nuevo León, and the Asta Bandera. To the northwest, Cumbres runs for kilometers along Av. Paseo de los Leones, while Santa María closes the southwest side at the Puente de la Unidad, the cable-stayed bridge over the Río Santa Catarina.

What to consider before renting

Metrorrey covers the north and the center of the city, and stops short of the south. Línea 1 crosses the north and its Hospital station sits inside Mitras Centro, beside the UANL Hospital Universitario. Línea 2 runs north to south and ends downtown, with a station of its own on Av. Alfonso Reyes in Regina. Along Av. Eugenio Garza Sada there is no train at all: the monorail once planned above that avenue was canceled in 2024, so Tecnológico, next to the Tec campus, means buses and driving. For a lower rent on that same Línea 2, San Nicolás de los Garza sits directly north, with four of the line's stations inside it.
