The opening of this Royal Road to Campeche in 1790 by Governor Lucas de Gálvez, which passed through San Juan and La Ermita, gave the neighborhood great economic and urban vitality.

It is famous for its festivities in August, which include guilds and cattle drives. It is believed that the Panucho, the emblematic Yucatecan snack, was born in this neighborhood.
