The zone runs from the prestige core of Jardines del Pedregal, the 1950s colonia Luis Barragán laid out in Álvaro Obregón, through the gated Tlalpan colonias like Fuentes del Pedregal and Parque del Pedregal near Perisur, to the Coyoacán side by Ciudad Universitaria. Prices span a wide range, with Jardines del Pedregal at the top and the Tlalpan colonias more reachable.

The zone crosses three alcaldías, so which one a house sits in changes its permits, services and taxes. Everything is built on lava rock, so gardens and levels tend to step with the stone, and older houses carry the era they were built in, worth checking before you plan any remodeling. The eastern edge borders Ciudad Universitaria, a UNESCO-listed campus, and the university's Reserva Ecológica del Pedregal, protected lava wilderness you can visit on guided trails.
