Living in Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido spreads along about ten kilometres of Oaxacan coast, and each end works like its own small town. The centre is built around El Adoquín, the pedestrian stretch of Av. Pérez Gasga, where the market, the banks and most errands sit within a few blocks. Northwest the ground rises into clifftop streets above the cove at playa Carrizalillo and the calm water of playa Bacocho. Southeast, past the surf at playa Zicatela, newer building runs toward La Punta, the bohemian end of Brisas de Zicatela. Carretera Federal 200 links the ends, and most people cross town by moto-taxi or colectivo.

What to consider before renting

The town straddles two municipalities: the centre and the clifftop streets sit in San Pedro Mixtepec, everything from playa Zicatela southeast in Santa María Colotepec, so which town hall handles your paperwork depends on the street. The airport is two kilometres from the centre, with direct flights to Mexico City, and the Barranca Larga-Ventanilla motorway, open since 2024, put the state capital about two and a half hours away.
