Living in Centro

Centro Histórico, on the Cuauhtémoc side, is the original core of Mexico City and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Renting here usually means living inside a colonial or Porfirian era building converted into apartments, steps from the Zócalo, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace. Pedestrian streets like Madero connect that core to the Palacio de Bellas Artes, and daily errands (markets, pharmacies, corner stores, transit) are almost always within walking distance. West across Eje Central is Tabacalera, with quieter, more residential streets, and to the northwest, by the train station, sits Buenavista.

What to consider before renting

Centro sits entirely inside the INAH and INBAL protected perimeter around the historic core, with over a thousand catalogued monuments, one of the densest such concentrations in the city. That protection is a large part of why so few of these buildings ever became standalone houses: modifying one usually requires prior approval, so it is worth asking whether a building is catalogued before signing. The feel also shifts between the blocks right off the Zócalo, busier with tourism, and the quieter interior streets at night, so anyone after a calmer address can look just south across Eje 1 Sur at Doctores.
