Buying in Merida

Where you buy in Merida comes down to how far north you are willing to live. Montes de Amé stays inside the Periférico, on shaded streets where long-settled houses sit next to newer building. Past the ring road, Temozón Norte is the other end of the scale: a henequen hacienda that became ejido land in 1937 and is now one of the fastest-changing corners of the north, roughly eleven kilometers north of the Plaza Grande. Between those two points runs the corridor that has absorbed most of the city's growth for decades.

What to consider before buying

Outside the Periférico the city splits into two fronts. To the west, Ciudad Caucel is a state-backed satellite town begun around 2004 beyond the Periférico Poniente, and Gran Santa Fe continues that cluster in sections around artificial lakes of its own. Ciudad Caucel is served by conventional Va y Ven buses that come in along Avenida Jacinto Canek from the O'Horán hospital; Gran Santa Fe reaches that same avenue through the Periférico Poniente. North of the ring road instead, along the port highway corridor, Las Américas was planned with underground wiring, parks and a bike path. In Kanasín, the separate municipality on the southeast edge, buying costs less than in Merida.
